Brick-walls destruction is one of the skills that are a must for every visual effects artist in the field of simulations. Here you will get a brief introduction to RBD objects in Houdini and learn the basics of the RBD and Bullet Solvers and how simulations work.
This second session of the course will show you about dealing with constraints and make them look good. Knowing this, you will achieve realistic results depending on the type of material you want to simulate. Constrains are especially important when trying to create realistic simulations for visual effects scenes. Therefore, you need to learn how to use them to master destruction in Houdini completely.

To destroy a building the right way, you need the right building. This section of the training course will be dedicated to model destroyable and optimized objects ready to be used in any destruction simulation. Art direction plays a key role here, so we have to make sure you know some of the most useful tricks to create amazing Hollywood destruction simulations in Houdini.
Now we are ready to start working with different types of materials inside Houdini. I am pretty sure that you have seen a couple of simulations where you say: Hey! That doesn’t look right. That is because not all materials break or shatter the same way. Glass, Concrete, Wood, or Metal all have completely different densities and physical properties. This part of the course will help you identify and manipulate fracturing, shattering, and shading techniques so you can accomplish any destruction requirement inside a Houdini simulation.


Now that we’ve some fractured buildings, assets, and everything is set for a perfect dynamic’s destruction. We are ready to start calculating our rigid body simulations using Houdini’s RBD and Bullet solvers. Here we will discuss Simulation setup and important parameters to avoid all complications possible in the future.
Let us talk about different options for controlling your destruction simulations using velocity attributes, activation, relationships, and other attributes. In this class, you will learn how to work with proxy geometry and create organic deformation and rigid object colliders. Learn how to develop artistic passes for the first layer of RBD simulations and learn some of the most efficient & flexible ways for caching your simulations saving time and unnecessary frustration.

Time to learn how to set up constraints to control destruction in your simulations. Now you will use some of the knowledge learned previously to create a fusion between manual and auto-generated constraints, focusing on glue constraints and soft constraints. With this, you can create more realistic destruction setups and relationships between pieces in your simulations but learn some other techniques for art-directing your destruction simulations.
The final destruction of well-polished shots that you see in movies are carefully crafted and choreographed using some other traditional CG methods. I mean, just a little tiny bit of details that you can spot on-screen are simulated. In this part of the course, we will focus on adding more detail to our scenes and recreate some assets to help sell our shots with increased drama and realism. After this post-simulation process, you will start adding some procedural construction detail, always keeping in mind real case scenarios of destruction. Add dramatically damaged objects to enhance the performance of your scene without having to re-calculate the entire simulation. Remember, our goal is to make it real but cool, well… really cool.


Debris is an especially important part of every destruction simulation, there is no point in trying to simulate destruction on Houdini without remains and those little pieces found in demolition events. The debris Houdini tool is used to emit particles from our fractured objects as they start to separate from each other. Using debris in Houdini, you can quickly add this effect but using some other particle tricks as can help to create a more realistic destruction simulation without compromising performance in our system.
Now it is time to start dealing with windows and glass destruction in Houdini. Breaking or shattering glass (or wood) has been a little tricky in Houdini, but nowadays we have new tools that allow you to quickly obtain incredible results. The downside of using the RBD Material SOP in Houdini is that it can slow down your workflow and resources considerably. But do not worry because, in this class, we will examine some glass shattering and breaking techniques that will make your simulations run smoothly without compromising the quality and detail that you always wanted.

A Houdini FX destruction scene can not be called great without a dust simulation. Dust is always there, even if you do not see it when a static object has been sitting there for a long time. But what happens whit all the dust that appears when you shake off that object?

Simulating dust can be a pain if not done correctly because there are too many things to consider, and adding them correctly into the choreographed destruction scene is just one of them. In this lesson of the course, we will explore different ways of generating and simulating dust collisions keeping in mind system resources and optimizing our workflow using some caching techniques.

This is the last class of the training course, but that doesn’t mean that the class is not important. Now we will start working towards making our scene look amazing on every screen using shading, texturing, lighting, render, and compositing techniques to export our final shoot.
